How to Protect Furniture, Electronics, and Important Papers in Storage

Wipe down wood, metal, and plastic furniture before packing it away. Dust and food residue can attract pests, while moisture trapped in cushions or drawers can lead to odors. Let everything dry completely before covering or boxing it.

For wood tables, dressers, and shelves, use furniture pads, moving blankets, or breathable covers. Avoid wrapping wood tightly in plastic for long periods, since trapped humidity can be hard on finishes. Take removable legs, shelves, and hardware off larger pieces when possible, label the parts, and keep screws in a sealed bag taped to the furniture.
